Box Score - UC Riverside 10, CSU Bakersfield 6
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside baseball team completed the series sweep over CSU Bakersfield on Sunday with a 10-6 win at the Riverside Sports Complex in non-conference action. The Highlanders improve to 20-13 overall while the Runners fall to 17-20.
Matt Larkins got the start for UCR, going five innings and allowing four runs while striking out two. He left the game with the score tied at four, however, so he was ineligible for the win.
Mike Wolford came in on relief in the sixth and pitched 1.1 innings, allowing no runs and picking up his second win of the season as the Highlanders turned their 4-4 tie into a 7-4 advantage after scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Joey Gonzales led off the inning with a walk, and advanced to second on a Roberty Brantly single. A Justin Shults single followed by a Tony Nix double plated two runs, and UCR got the third run off a Dan Pellegrino sacrifice fly.
After a scoreless seventh inning on both sides, the Highlanders added three insurance runs in the eighth. Brantly led off with a triple, and Shults brought him home on a RBI single. With the bases loaded two batters later, Roadrunners pitcher Erik Draxton walked in a run to make it 9-4.
After a pitching change, Bryan Horst hit a grounder to third base, allowing Nix to score from third for the 10-4 advantage.
CSUB made it interesting in the top of the ninth, however, by plating two runs on one hit and one error. After scoring two, the Runners had the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate with two outs, but relief pitcher Mitch Patito got the last out of the inning to end the scoring threat.
Patito would end up with his third save on the season as he pitched 0.2 innings in the top of the ninth.
The Highlanders got on board in the second inning off a solo home run by Nix. The Runners came back with three runs in the top of the third, however, to take a 3-1 advantage.
UCR was able to get those runs back in the fourth as they scored two to knot the game at three apiece. Both teams then plated one run apiece in each of their respective fifth innings for a 4-4 tie until the Highlanders rallied for three runs in the sixth.
For the day, Nix had three RBI, three hits, and two runs while Brantly had three hits and three runs and Shults had three RBI, two hits, and one run.
The Highlanders hit the road for eight straight games starting with a Tuesday, Apr. 27 meeting at UNLV. First pitch is slated for 6:00 pm in Las Vegas, NV.
