Seven Highlanders Drafted In 2011 Major League Baseball Draft

UC Riverside's Matt Andriese was the first Highlanders baseball player selected in the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday, as the San Diego Padres took him 112th overall in the third round of the draft.
Trevor Hairgrove was the second UCR player taken in the draft, as he was selected 555th in the 18th round by the Los Angeles Angels.
In the 26th round, the Highlanders had two more players drafted as Ryan Goetz went to the Florida Marlins with the 793rd pick, and Mike Wolford went to the Colorado Rockies at No. 798.
On Wednesday, Dustin Emmons became the first UCR player to get drafted on day three, as he went in the 38th round to the New York Mets. The Houston Astros drafted Justin Shults in the 46th round, while Tony Nix was drafted by the Washington Nationals in the 50th round.
Andriese was named to the Big West Honorable Mention team after posting a 4-5 record with a 2.63 ERA. During the 2011 season, the Redlands native led the Highlanders staff in innings pitched and games started.
At CSU Bakersfield on April 22, Andriese pitched a complete game, one-hit shutout—the first one-hit game in UCR's Division I history.
Hairgrove had a breakout senior season in 2011, earning Big West All-Conference First Team honors. The Highland native led UC Riverside in batting average, slugging percentage and hits, while ranking among the top in the league in eight different categories.
Hairgrove was named Big West Conference Player of the Week, College Baseball Insider West Region Player of the Week and a College Baseball 360 Primetime Performer for games played from April 18-24 after hitting .538 with a .571 on base percentage and a .692 slutting percentage.
Goetz was named to the Big West All-Conference Second team this season after ranking in the top-10 in the conference in five statistical categories. The Temple City native finished second on the Highlanders squad in batting average while leading the team in at bats.
Wolford earned Big West Honorable Mention Honors this season out of the bullpen posting a 2-0 record with a 2.35 ERA. The Hemet native led the Highlanders pitching staff in appearances, game finished, and games in relief.
Emmons went 7-3 during the 2011 season, leading UCR's pitching staff in wins. The La Crescenta native appeared in 18 games—the third most on the team—while starting in nine contests.
Shults earned Big West Honorable Mention honors in 2011 with a batting line of .293/.424/.412 (ba/slg/obp). He led the team in walks while tying for first in home runs.
Nix was also named to the Big West Honorable Mention team in 2011, leading the Highlanders in RBI and doubles.
