Fullerton, CA - The UC Riverside softball team combined to score 13 runs as they swept a doubleheader at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday evening, 6-5 and 7-5, in Big West action at Anderson Field.
It is just the second series victory for the Highlanders (20-23, 3-8) over Cal State Fullerton (16-23, 4-7) in the program's Division I history. UCR won two of three games from the Titans back in 2010.
In the first game, the Highlanders quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Titans closed the gap to 3-2 in their respective frame.
Kayla White led off with a single for UCR, and advanced to second as Ariel Shore reached on an error by CSF's third baseman. Brittany Keeney sent both runners 60 feet on her groundout, and Jessica Vasser doubled to right center bringing both runners plateward.
With Vasser on third after another out, Yesenia Duenas laced a single to centerfield, scoring Vasser for UCR's third run of the inning.
Casey Suda got the starting nod for the Highlanders in the circle, but allowed a lead-off single and a walk. After an out, Anissa Young doubled down the left field line, scoring two.
With one out in the second inning for UC Riverside, White and Shore both singled, putting runners at first and second. Vasser came through with another hit as White scored, and Shore snuck home on an error by the Titan's rightfielder.
In the third, the Highlanders added a single run as White singled through the right side, scoring Dionne Anderson for a 6-2 advantage.
Cal State Fullerton got that run back in the bottom of that frame, and added two runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 6-5.
Suda was replaced in the circle by Jordyn McDonald, and she gave up just one hit in relief, including retiring the Titans in order in the seventh, as UCR held on for the 6-5 victory.
McDonald picked up the win for UCR, while Desiree Ybarra was saddled with the loss.
For the second straight game, UCR got on board first, as Vasser hit a 2-RBI home run in the first inning of the nightcap.
Cal State Fullerton quickly got those runs back and more, however, touching UCR starter Taylor Alvarez for four runs. Alvarez allowed a lead-off single, and after a sac bunt, hit the next batter. An illegal pitch moved both runners 60 feet, and another hit by pitch and an illegal pitch made it 2-1.
With two runners on, Gabby Aragon homered to centerfield, lifting the Titans to a 4-2 lead.
After two scoreless innings on both sides, UC Riverside got one across in the fourth. Vasser led off by getting plunked by a pitch, and advanced to second on Alexis Pickett's bunt single.
Both runners advanced on a sac bunt, and with two outs, Jojo Mendoza singled through the left side, scoring Vasser. Pickett rounded third and was coming home, but was called out at the plate as the inning ended at 4-3.
The Titans got that run back in their half of the inning, as Morgan LeMond led off with a single, and came home on Kirsten Lambertson's double.
The Highlanders offense came alive in the sixth, as Keeney led off with a single, and Vasser was walked. Pickett then singled to load the bases, and Duenas singled down the left field line scoring Keeney to cut the lead to 5-4.
Anderson grounded out to the first baseman but recorded an RBI as Vasser came plateward tying the game at five. A walk to Mendoza prompted a pitching change by the Titans, and Alaina Thomas greeted Ybarra with a single to third base, scoring Pickett for the 6-5 lead.
UCR ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases, but was able to get out of the frame unscathed and held on to the 6-5 advantage.
In the top of the seventh, Shore got hit by a pitch to lead off, and moved around the bases on Pickett's RBI triple down the left field line as UCR went up 7-5.
The Titans threatened in their bottom half, again loading the bases. However, with one out, Jena Rubio lined into a double play as the UCR defense turned two to get out of the inning and end the game, winning 7-5.
Alvarez earned the win in the circle for the Highlanders, while Katey Laban suffered the loss.
For the day, Vasser went 4-for-6 with five RBI, while White added four hits.
The three-game series concludes on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon in Fullerton, CA.
