Men's Tennis Wins Doubles Point But Falls Short To Stetson, 5-2

Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Tennis Team won the doubles point Wednesday against Stetson, but emerged victorious in just one singles match as the Hatters came away with the 5-2 win at Andulka Park. Watch the Recap Video.
"Today was an opportunity lost for UCR men's tennis," Head Coach Tim Downey stated. "Stetson was a very good team but we let too many chances slip away. We did well in the doubles but it was obvious they were stronger singles players."
The Highlanders came out of the gate strong in doubles, as Jimmy Roberts and Julian Ruffin won 8-3 at number one. Kevin Griffin and Marcus Vizcarra dropped their match, 8-4 at number two, but Calvin Ngo and Luis Gastao won a hard-fought, 8-6 battle at #3 to secure the doubles point for UCR.
In singles, Stetson won in five of the six matches to take home the victory. Luis Gastao earned the lone point for the Highlanders, winning 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 retired at number two. Two of the other singles matches went into extra frames, but the Hatters held on to defeat UCR.
"I'm disappointed that we let another match go," Downey contineud." We were right there, playing them tough, but we still didn't believe we could come through with the win. We better start soon because we need to be ready for conference play."
The Highlanders now gear up for a Friday, March 8 match against Loyola Marymount at 12 pm at Andulka Park in Riverside.
