Two Second-Half Goals Give UC Irvine 4-2 Men's Soccer Win Over UCR

Cesar Diaz's (pictured) goal with 13 minutes gone in the second half tied the game at two goals apiece, but UC Irvine scored in the 67th and 72nd minute to come away with a 4-2 win over the Highlanders Wednesday evening in Big West Conference action. Next up for UC Riverside is a Saturday evening home match against Cal Poly beginning at 7 pm PT.
The Anteaters (9-4-0, 2-2-0) got on the board first with 9:12 gone in the match as Irving Garcia scored his sixth goal of the season off of a Spencer Thompson pass.
As the first half neared the midway point, UC Irvine's Jorge Reyes picked up two yellow cards less than two minutes apart putting UC Riverside (1-11-0, 0-4-0) a man up with 67:20 to play. Unfortunately, the Highlanders gave the advantage back when Nate Paterson picked up his second yellow card of the evening less than two minutes later.
UC Irvine made it 2-0 in he 31st minute of play as Thompson picked up his second assist of the night this time finding Jonathan Prieto for his third goal of the year. The Highlanders got on the board with 6:26 left in the first following an Anteater penalty in UCR's box. Tyler Wilson netted the penalty kick for his second score of the season.
Following the break, Diaz took a pass from Xavier Perez and deposited it in the back of the net to tie the match at two. UC Irvine regained the lead with 22:10 to go as Garcia connected on a free kick for his seventh goal of the year. The Anteaters added on an insurance goal five minutes later when Amani Walker logged his fifth score of the season.
