Volleyball Mounts Comeback For 3-2 Big West Win At Pacific

Stockton, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team took to the road on Friday evening for a Big West Conference match at Pacific, and after falling in the first two sets 25-20 and 25-22, the Highlanders mounted a comeback and won the remaining three sets 30-28, 25-15, and 15-9 for the 3-2. UCR (4-16, 2-8) is now a perfect 4-0 on the season in matches that have gone into five sets.
Tonbara Youpele (pictured) led the Highlanders with a game-high and career-high 21 kills while also tallying 10 digs, while Dominique Cowling posted 19 kills and a game-high 21 digs. Bianca Endersby tied her career-high eight blocks assists and Brittney Murrey recorded 47 assists.
UCR started off the match with a two point lead at three different occasions in the early moments of the first set before Pacific (15-7, 5-5) tied things up at six and proceeded to run off four straight points to take a 10-6 advantage.
The Highlanders, though, would close the gap to one, 12-11, off a Endersby kill before the Tigers rattled off three more points to push the lead out to 15-11.
UCR again closed the margin to one, 16-15, this time off a Tonbara Youpele kill, but Pacific scored two straight as they would close out the set 25-20.
In the second set the Highlanders found themselves down 17-12 but rallied to within one, 22-21, capped off by block assists from Endersby and Angela Pizzella.
The Tigers then scored next but a Youpele kill put UCR again within one, 23-22, but the Highlanders could not capitalize down the stretch as Pacific used two consecutive points to take the set 25-22.
The third set was close the entire time as there were 19 tie scores and seven lead changes until UC Riverside opened up a 23-20 lead late in the set. The Tigers rallied back to tie things at 23, and after five more tie scores, UCR used two Cowling kills to put the set away 30-28 and keep the match alive.
In the fourth set, the Highlanders took a 8-8 tie and turned it into a 25-15 win, hitting .219 as a team while holding the Tigers to a -.160 hitting percentage.
With the match now tied at two sets apiece, UC Riverside scored first in the final set and never looked back, leading 4-1 and 10-6 en route to a 15-9 win. The Highlanders hit a game-high .333 with just one error in the fifth set.
UC Riverside is now 3-4 in their last seven matches including winning the last two of three games. The Highlanders continue play in Northern California with a 7:00 pm match at UC Davis on Saturday, Oct. 31.
