Eugene, OR - The UC Riverside men's and women's cross country teams traveled to Eugene, OR on Saturday morning to compete in the 2009 NCAA West Regionals hosted by the University of Oregon at Springfield Country Club. The men's squad placed 12th of 26 teams with a score of 340 while the women's team finished 17th of 25 with a 433 total.
Chad Hall (pictured) led the Highlanders men in 31:21.73 to finish 24th overall, earning All-Region honors in the process. Freshman
Emmanuel Ngula ran the 10k course in a new personal-best time of 31:58.61 to finish 48th, one of the top results from a freshmen in the event.
Senior
Daniel Lindstrom finished third on the squad while closing out his UCR career in 84th place with a time of 32:52.46. Sophomore
Steven Crum placed 89th in 32:55.55 while senior
Jose Melena also finished his career with the blue and gold in 33:18.05 to place 103rd.
Rounding out the Highlanders team was
Talal Khan, who finished 113th in 33:26.92, and
Brett Valencia, placing 148th in 34:29.71.
Stanford won the men's 10k event with 27 total points while Portland finished second, Oregon placed third, Washington fourth, and Cal Poly and Arizona State tied for fifth.
On the women's side, freshman
Katy Daly finished first on the squad for UCR for the fourth time this season, placing 33rd in 21:54.69. Her time was one of the top for freshmen running in the race.
Senior
Ashleigh Pratt placed 77th, completing the 6k course in 22:40.72, while
Jenessia Navarro finished in 106th place with a time of 23:02.67,
Jackie Juarez placed 120th overall in 23:16.01, and
Margaret Sitker finished 124th in 23:19.62.
Damajeria DuBose and
Natalie Aceves rounded out the UCR squad in 134th and 143rd place respectively.
Washington won the women's 6k race tallying just 25 points followed by Pac-10 schools Oregon, Stanford, Arizona State, and Arizona.
The top two teams from each of the men's and women's races automatically qualify for NCAA Nationals.
