Austin, Gurganious Notch Career Highs As Highlanders Top La Verne
11/19/2009 9:34:30 PM | Men's Basketball
UC Riverside 87, La Verne 71 - Box Score
Kyle Austin and Larry Gurganious (pictured) both produced career-high scoring games Thursday evening as the Highlanders (1-2) upended visiting La Verne, 87-71, for the team's first win of the year. Austin also tied his career high with 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
UCR got off to a slow start leading by just three points, 23-20, with 5:07 remaining in the first, but a 13-6 run to close the period gave them a 10-point lead at the break. The Highlanders used their size advantage to outscore the Leopards 18-4 in the paint in the first 20 minutes, but didn't have an answer for La Verne's Trevor Woodland who was a perfect 3 for 3 from three-point range in the half.
The Leopards (0-2) scored seven of the first nine points coming out of the locker room and closed the UCR lead to three with just 4:35 gone in the second. However, Kyle Austin's two free throws with 15:09 remaining started a 10-0 and a virtual parade to the charity stripe as UCR made 24 of 29 free throws in the second half.
The Highlanders never led by less than 10 points the rest of the way, but La Verne managed to stay in the game by nailing 14 of 33 threes on the night led by Woodland's 6 of 10 and John Leggett's 5 of 6.
Austin scored 20 of his 25 points after the break making 8 of 9 shots from the free throw line and 6 of 8 from two-point range. Gurganious netted 14 of his 21 in the final 20 minutes including hitting 8 of 10 from the line, and also grabbed a career-high nine rebounds coming up one board short of his first career double-double.
Sean Cunningham continued his impressive offensive start to the season as he finished with a season-high 14 points and drained another pair of threes to give him a team-high five on the year. Konner Veteto just missed a double-double with 14 points and eight rebounds.
The Highlanders remain at home this weekend as San Jose State travels down the coast to the Student Recreation Center for a 2 pm tip on Sunday afternoon.
