UCR Cross Country Travels To NCAA Regionals On Saturday

The UC Riverside men's and women's cross country teams are traveling to Eugene, OR on Saturday for the 2009 NCAA West Regionals hosted by the University of Oregon at Springfield Country Club. The men’s race begins at 9:45 a.m., with the women going off at 10:45 a.m.

At this year's event, both the men's and women's races will feature at least five teams ranked nationally in the latest cross country polls.

The men’s teams include: Arizona, #13 Arizona State, Boise State, California, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Eastern Washington, Fresno State, Idaho, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, #3 Oregon, Pepperdine, #7 Portland, Portland State, Sacramento State, Saint Mary’s, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Clara, #1 Stanford, UCLA, #17 Washington, and Washington State.

The men’s individuals include: Juan Olea, Cal State Northridge; Chris Boyle, Gonzaga; Brett Withers, Gonzaga; Alfredo Coronado, San Jose State; and David Haefele, San Jose State.

On the women’s side, the teams include: #24 Arizona, #16 Arizona State, #27 California, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly, Fresno State, Hawaii, Idaho, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, Nevada-Las Vegas, #5 Oregon, Oregon State, Pepperdine, Portland, Portland State, Sacramento State, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Clara, #14 Stanford, UCLA, USC, #1 Washington, and Washington State.

The women’s individuals include: Shannon Porter, Boise State; Carolyn Ellis, Cal State Fullerton; Yomaira Hernandez, Cal State Fullerton; Lilyana Morejon, Cal State Northridge; Kristina Hammarstrom, Pacific; Jazmin Quiroz, Pacific; and Rosie Smith, Saint Mary’s.

A year ago, the Highlanders women finished in 12th place at the 2008 NCAA Regionals, while the men's squad finished in 13th place.

Brenda Martinez led the women's team finishing the 6K course in 44th place with a time of 21:15.35. She was followed by Danielle Evans (60th - 21:28.61), Cristina Olivas (78th - 21:52.48) and Ashleigh Pratt (79th - 21:52.83).

Chad Hall paced the men's squad finishing the 10K course in 30:28.93 - good enough for 46th place - followed by Michael Buell (77th - 31:27.91) and Daniel Lindstrom (78th - 31:32.82).
