Kyle Austin scored the first basket of the game for the Highlanders (6-3) and UC Riverside led wire to wire as they upended visiting Berry College, 85-53, at the Student Recreation Center Wednesday evening. Brandon Dowdy (pictured) scored 14 points on the night to lead four Highlanders in double figures.
UC Riverside was without Head Coach Jim Wooldridge who was at home resting an injured back. He no doubt listened to the game via gohighlanders.com as the Voice of the Highlanders, John Ramey, called the action from courtside. Assistant Coach Dennis Cutts took over in his stead.
Austin's layup 16 seconds into the game gave UC Riverside the early lead over the VIkings (3-6), and a Lateef McMullan three-pointer led to the Highlanders' first double-digit advantage, 24-14, with 10:36 to go in the first. Konner Veteto's free throws with 5:05 to go made it 39-19 UCR, and the Highlanders took a 48-25 lead into the locker room at the half.
McMullan's nine points led UC Riverside at the break as nine Highlanders dented the scoring column in the first 20 minutes of play.
It was more of the same in the second half as UCR's lead reached 32 points with 9:39 left in the period on a Dowdy three-pointer. Sean Cunnigham picked up the 100th steal of his collegiate career late in the second as well.
The Highlanders connected on 48.5 percent of their field goal attempts on the evening in running their home winning streak to nine straight at the SRC while holding the Vikings to just 30.8 percent from the field.
Larry Gurganious (11 points), McMullan (11) and Veteto (10) also reached double figures in scoring for UC Riverside. Tim Miles scored 19 points to lead the visitors and Will Blackwell chipped in with 17.
The Highlanders head out on a two-game road trip before taking a brief break for the holidays as they travel to Montana for a Saturday evening meeting with the Grizzlies, and to Southern Utah for a Monday match up with the Thunderbidds. Both games can be heard at gohighlanders.com as the Voice of the Highlanders, John Ramey, brings you the call from courtside.
