
Softball Wins 8-7 Thriller In Extra Innings Against San Diego

Riverside, CA – The UC Riverside softball team (2-5) closed out the aTen Construction Invitational with a thrilling come-from-behind 8-7 victory over San Diego on Sunday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field. The Highlanders scored the go-ahead run in the ninth inning as they defeated the Torreros (0-4) for the second time in three days.
UCR got on board early as they scored three runs in the first. After two walks and a single, Tiana Towns singled to center field advancing Marissa Alvidrez from second and Kameryn Hebenton from third. Brooke Hebenton then singled to plate Katie Curtis, giving UCR an early 3-0 lead.
San Diego answered in the second, though, by scoring six runs on four hits to take a 6-3 lead.
The Highlanders and Torreros each picked up an additional run in the third, but UCR rallied in the fifth and scored three runs to tie the game. A leadoff double by Curtis started off the inning, and after advancing to third on a passed ball, Curtis was driven home by a RBI single from B. Hebenton. Taylor Thomas then hit a two RBI double that plated Towns and Hebenton, knotting the game at seven apiece.
Neither team could score in the sixth or seventh innings, so the game entered extra innngs. With a runner at second base in the ninth, Towns drove in the winning run plating Tricia Adgar and giving the Highlanders an 8-7 victory.
Alvidrez (2-3) picked up the win for UCR as she gave up just one run on seven hits in 7.1 innings of relief. Towns and Thomas each had three RBI for the Highlanders, while B. Hebenton led with three hits.
UCR next travels across the country to Tallahassee, FL for the Seminole Classic on Feb. 21-22. They first face off against #5 Michigan at 9:15 am PT on Saturday, followed by a 1:45 pm matchup with Indiana.
