
Brenda Martinez Runs Fastest 1500m Time In The Nation

Junior Brenda Martinez (above), running her first 1500m of the season, ran the fastest time for a collegian in the nation this year at the Mt. SAC Relays while breaking the UCR and Big West Conference records with a time of 4:14.66. (Watch the race) The old UCR record, which Martinez owned, was 4:17.09. Danielle Evans made her NCAA qualifying time in her 1500m heat with a time of 4:22.68.
Earlier in the day, senior Pedro Ramos and sophomore Chad Hall, competing in the 1500m at Mt. SAC, both bettered the NCAA qualifying mark with their times and finished second (3:45.81) and third (3:46.35) in the event respectively. Ramos came within .19 second of winning the event.
Ashley Williams joined them as an NCAA qualifier with a time of 2:07.92 in the 800m. She finished third overall. Also at the Mt. SAC Relays, Molly Russell hit her Big West qualifying mark in the 100m.
On Thursday, junior Jackie Juarez broke the school record in the 10,000m with a time of 37:08.51. Brenna Bauer was the previous standard bearer after posting a 37:19.36 at last year's Mt. SAC Relays.
Several other UCR track and field athletes are competing at the Azusa Pacific Invitational this weekend where Toni Smith met her Big West qualifying standard in the 100m hurdles and Allison Wilder bettered her UCR record in the triple jump with a leap of 41' 7.75".
The Mt. SAC Relays take place at the Hilmer Lodge Stadium located on the campus of Mt. San Antonio College nearly 30 miles east of Los Angeles. The Relays continue throughout Friday, April 17 and Saturday, April 18. The complete schedule is available at the Mt. SAC website. Results are posted throughout the competition.
