
Highlanders Drop First Game Of Long Beach State Series, 5-2

The Long Beach State Dirtbags scored three runs late to break open a 2-2 game and take a 5-2 conference win over the Highlanders Friday evening in the first game of a three-game Big West series.
The Dirtbags struck first scoring a run in the bottom of the second as Derek Legg opened the inning with a double to left center off of UCR starter Paul Bargas. A sac bunt moved him to third and a grounder to second gave Long Beach a 1-0 lead.
The Highlanders countered in the top of the third with a two-out rally of ther own. Carl Uhl got things stared with a single to right advancing to third on a single by Joey Gonzales. Michael Hur plated both runners with a single of his own for a UC Riverside 2-1 advantage.
Long Beach scored the equalizer in the bottom of the third as TJ Mittelstaedt trippled to center plating Jordan Casas.
The teams remained tied until the bottom of ths seventh when with two outs and a runner on second back-to-back singles sandwiched around a stolen base put the Dirtbags back on top, 4-2.
The Highlanders appeared ready to strike back in the top of the eighth loading the bases with one out, but Tony Nix popped out to short and Bryan Horst grounded out to first ending the inning..
Long Beach tacked on an uneared run in the bottom of the eighth or the final 5-2 margin of victory.
Game 2 of the series is scheduled for Saturday at Long Beach State. First pitch is set for 2 pm.
