UC Riverside 4, Long Beach State 3 - Box Score
Long Beach, CA - The Dirtbags had runners on the corners in the bottom of the ninth, but UCR closer Joseph Kelly got the job done as the Highlanders held on for the 4-3 win at Long Beach State on Sunday afternoon. UCR improves to 18-8 on the season and 2-4 in conference play.
Long Beach State struck first as they touched UCR starter Paul Applebee for two runs in the second inning, but the Highlanders responded with two runs of their own in the top of the third and the fourth. A pair of Dirtbag errors combined with a Brian McConkey grounder tied the game at two apiece, and then Robert Brantly's two-out double scored the go-ahead runs for the Highlanders. (Listen to John Ramey's call of Brantly's double)
The Dirtbags scored one run in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't complete the comeback as Rylan Sandoval's groundout ended the Dirtbags' chance for extra frames. (Listen to John Ramey's postgame call)
Applebee pitched seven innings of six-hit work, allowing just two runs and striking out five. With his sixth save of the season, Kelly is now tied for second place all-time in Highlander history with 18 career saves.
UCR returns to the diamond for a three-game series at Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday-Saturday, April 9-11. First pitch Thursday is 2:00 pm.
