UC Riverside 11, UC Davis 1 - Box Score
With losses in their first two games against UC Davis putting a hitch in their postseason chances, the Highlanders needed to end their skid Sunday in game three of their three-game series with the Aggies. And end it they did with a convincing 11-1 win.
Junior Paul Applebee took to the mound for UCR holding the Aggies to five hits and one run over six and a third innings. Dustin Emmons came on in relief and threw one and two thirds scoreless innings and Joseph Kelly added a scoreless ninth.
The game started out as a low-scoring affair as the Highlanders scored a single run in the top of the first on a double steal executed by Ryan Goetz (second) and Joey Gonzales (home), and UC Davis plated a run in the bottom of the second on an Eric Johnson RBI double.
UCR (29-16, 8-10) scored again in the fourth on a double play grounder and in the fifth on a Tony Nix RBI single to make the score 3-1 Highlanders. Applebee (8-2) faced just one batter over the minimum in the third through sixth innings giving way to Emmons after a one-out double in the seventh. Emmons got the next two hitters in order and worked a perfect eighth inning as well.
Meanwhile, the Highlanders added to their lead on a Robert Brantly solo shot in the seventh and a Carl Uhl sac fly in the eighth to make it 5-1 UCR heading into the ninth. Nathan Slater, the Aggies (9-37, 4-14) third pitcher of the afternoon, started the top of the ninth on the hill, but UC Davis went to the pen again after he put runners on first and second with one out. Jeremy McChesney got the call, but he gave up back-to-back doubles to Nix and Justin Shultz scoring three more, and walked the next two batters to load the bases.
Tim Busbin followed McChesney to the mound and got Uhl to hit a grounder to second, but everybody was safe after an error on the play, and two runners were home for a10-1 UCR advantage. Gonzales lifted a fly ball to center scoring Trevor Hairgrove from third for the 11th and final Highlanders run.
UC Riverside returns home for a Tuesday meeting with UNLV before hosting their final Big West Conference homestand of the season over the weekend against UC Santa Barbara.
