UNLV 8, UC Riverside 6 - Box Score
For the third time in four games, the UC Riverside pitching staff was unable to hold on to a lead as they allowed seven runs over the final three innings to fall 8-6 to UNLV. The win drops the Highlanders to 29-17 and puts another damper in their postseason hopes.
UCR broke open a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third when Tony Nix connected on his fourth home run of the season over the left field wall.
Starter Ryan Platt shut the Rebels down through the sixth, but ran into trouble in the seventh when Jesse Wight took a 1-0 pitch over the center field fence to open the inning. Platt struck out Rance Roundy for what should have been the first out of the inning, but Platt's wild pitch on the play allowed Roundy to reach first. Scott Berke followed with a single to right center and Anthony Morel hit a seeing-eye single through the left side of the infield to draw the Rebels to within one.
Dustin Emmons replaced Platt on the hill and picked up the first out of the inning on a sac bunt that moved the runners to second and third. The next batter, Chad Claus, dropped down a bunt to the right side of the mound which Emmons fielded, but his throw was wide of the mark and UNLV evened the score at four.
In the eighth, Emmons recorded to the first two outs on a grounder to second and a fly ball to center, but the next three batters all singled to give the Rebels a 5-4 lead. Joseph Kelly relieved Emmons and got out of the inning, but in the ninth, UNLV touched him for two singles, a walk, a hit batsman and a fielder's choice which combined to plate the final three runs of the game for the Rebels.
The Highlanders loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, eventually bringing two runs home, but Trevor Hairgrove's chopper to short ended the UCR rally.
Next up for UC Riverside is a three-game conference series with UC Santa Barbara. Game times at the Riverside Sports Complex are 6 pm on Friday, 2 pm on Saturday and 1 pm on Sunday.
