UC Riverside 9, UC Santa Barbara 7 - Box Score
UC Riverside kept its postseason hopes alive Saturday evening as Michael Hur drove in three runs and Joseph Kelly picked up his record setting 22nd career save in the Highlanders 9-7 win over UC Santa Barbara.
UCR (31-17, 10-10) jumped out to an early 6-1 lead scoring three runs apiece in the first and second innings. Ryan Goetz picked up two RBIs with a triple in the first and Hur picked up a pair of ribbies in the second with a two-out double.
The Gauchos started chipping away at the Highlanders lead scoring single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings off of UC Riverside starter Paul Applebee. Kolby Moore took over for Applebee (9-2) with nobody out in the sixth getting out of the inning without any further damage.
Leading 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth, the Highlanders extended their lead to 7-4 behind an RBI single from Carl Uhl. Uhl made it 8-4 UCR two plays later when he caught UC Santa Barbara napping. Dan Pellegrino's single advanced Uhl to third, and Gauchos catcher Bryce Tafelski and Mario Hollands had a meeting on the mound to plan their next move. Uhl realized that time hadn't been called and outraced Tafelski to the plate for a rare steal of home.
UCSB touched Moore for a run in the eighth, and closer Kelly came on to pick up the final out of the inning. UCR got the run back in the bottom of the frame as Hur tripled home Pellegrino.
In the ninth. the Gauchos pushed two runs across to cut the lead to 9-7 before Kelly picked up the final out and his UCR record-setting 22nd career save.
UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara finish their three-game series on Sunday at 1 pm. It is Senior Day for the Highlanders who say goodbye to Ryan Platt, Brandon Schnebly and Uhl.
