USC 5, UC Riverside 4 - Box Score
UC Riverside battled back from a four-run deficit Tuesday evening at USC, tying the game at four in the top of the eighth. However, the Trojans Mike O'Neil tripled with one out in the bottom of the ninth, and Highlanders closer Joseph Kelly uncorked a wild pitch to give USC the 5-4 win.
The loss drops the Highlanders to 31-19 with three games remaining in the regular season. The final three games all come on the road this weekend against Big West Conference rival, Cal Poly.
The Trojans scored four quick runs in the bottom of the first behind three singles, a double, an error and two wild pitches off of UCR starter Ryan Platt. Platt and the rest of the Highlanders collected themselves, however, keeping the Trojans off the scoreboard for the next seven innings.
Meanwhile UC Riverside's bats started chipping away at the USC lead. Trevor Hairgrove opened the third with a single, and Carl Uhl followed with a triple to right center. One out later Michael Hur grounded out to first scoring Uhl.
In the top of the fourth, Bryan Horst singled up the middle scoring Robert Brantly who opened the inning with an infield single of his own.
Finally in the top of the eighth, the Highlanders tied the game at four when Tony Nix singled home Brantly with his second run of the night.
Platt went six innings for UC Riverside, allowing 10 hits, walking two batters and striking out six. Matt Larkins replaced him to start the seventh and allowed just one hit in his first two innings of work.
In the ninth, Larkins allowed the one-out triple to O'Neil and was replaced by UCR closer Kelly. Kelly walked Joe De Pinto to put runners at the corners, bringing Grant Green to the plate. Green didn't factor in the result, however, as Kelly's wild pitch allowed O'Neil to score the game winner.
