Brenda Martinez Named 2009 Big West Women's Track Athlete Of The Year

The Big West on Wednesday named UC Riverside's Brenda Martinez the conference Track Athlete of the Year for 2009. The junior from Rancho Cucamonga ran the 1500m this year in 4:13.66 to set the conference record. That time is fourth in the NCAA this season, seventh in the United States and in the top 20 in the world.

Once Martinez got to the conference meet, she won the 1500m and set a meet record in the 800m with a time of 2:03.05. Her 800m time is the fourth-fastest in the NCAA, sixth-best in the USA and in the top 15 in the world. Martinez also anchored UCR’s 4x400 relay team to a second place finish, and her top 800m and 1500m times are USA Championships “A” standards. View the complete Big West release.
