Cal Poly 6, UC Riverside 5 - Box Score
UC Riverside's NCAA postseason aspirations took another hit Friday evening as they battled back on two occasions to tie the game, but gave up a run in the bottom of the eighth to fall 6-5 at Cal Poly. The Highlanders have two more games left in the regular season: Saturday at 6 pm and Sunday at 1 pm, both against the Mustangs.
Matt Montgomery got the start in place of the injured Paul Bargas, and was only scheduled to pitch the first three innings as he is coming back from an injury of his own. After a scoreless first, Montgomery was touched for three singles, a walk and a double in the bottom of the second as Cal Poly jumped ahead 3-0.
The lead didn't last long as Joey Gonzales led off the top of the third with a solo homer, Michael Hur doubled down the right field line and scored one out later on a Robert Brantly single, and Brantly tied the game at three on a Justin Shultz RBI single to left.
Unfortunately for the Highlanders the Mustangs retook the lead in the bottom of the third as Adam Buschini and Wes Dorrell began the inning with back-to-back solo shots. Montgomery worked his way out of the inning giving way to Matt Andriese in the fourth.
UC Riverside cut the Cal Poly lead in half in the top of the fifth as singles by Ryan Goetz and Brantly put runners on the corners with nobody out. Tony Nix lifted a sac fly to left field scoring Goetz with the Highlanders' fourth run of the game.
Andriese kept the Mustangs in check allowing just two hits over the next four innings, but UCR came up empty in the sixth and seventh, and the score remained 5-4 Cal Poly.
The Highlanders finally broke through again in the top of the eighth as Shultz opened the inning with a walk and eventually scored on a two-out single by Carl Uhl to tie the game at five.
Andriese ran into trouble in the bottom of the eighth loading the bases with two outs behind a single and a pair of walks. Dustin Emmons came on in relief, and walked home the go-ahead run before picking up the third out of the inning.
Trailing 6-5 in the top of the ninth, the Highlanders picked up one baserunner when Geotz was hit by a pitch, but Eric Massingham retired the side for his sixth save of the year and the Mustangs win.
