5/23/2009 7:51:37 PM | Baseball
UC Riverside 7, Cal Poly 6 - Box Score
UC Riverside kept its NCAA postseason hopes alive as starter Paul Applebee allowed just seven hits over eight-plus innings and Ryan Goetz drove in three runs to lead the Highlanders to a 7-6 win over Cal Poly. UCR has one regular season game remaining on Sunday with the Mustangs at 1 pm. Their fate then gets handed over to the NCAA selection committee. The field of 64 for the 2009 NCAA Baseball Tournament will be announced on Monday, May 25 at 9:30 am PT.
The Highlanders jumped on Cal Poly starter Matt Leonard early and often Saturday scoring a pair of runs in the first, third and fourth innings. In the first, Brandon Schnebly singled to right and Goetz brought him home with his fifth homer of the year.
In the third, the Highlanders loaded the bases with nobody out for Michael Hur who beat out an infield single to make it 3-0 UCR. Goetz followed with a bases-loaded walk to push another run across the plate.
Carl Uhl's fourth-inning single up the middle brought Trent Jemmett home and Hur's sac fly one batter later scored Uhl.
The Mustangs finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Adam Buschini drove a 2-0 pitch over the left field fence. The Highlanders got the run back in the top of the fifth when Jemmett's triple scored Justin Shultz.
In the Cal Poly half of the fifth a double, a single and a wild pitch made the score 7-2, and the Mustangs plated two unearned runs in the seventh to cut the UCR lead to three.
The Highlanders still led 7-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth, and that's when they let things get interesting. Bobby Crocker drilled a home run to center on Applebee's first offering of the inning, chasing the senior and making the score 7-5 UCR.
Joseph Kelly came on to pick up his 11th save of the season, but gave up a double and an RBI single to bring the winning run to the plate. Kelly sandwiched a pair of strikeouts around a fly ball to center to end the threat and the game.
