UC Riverside 6, Cal Poly 5 - Box Score
Trailing 5-3 and down to their final three outs, possibly of the season, the Highlanders erupted for three runs in the top of the ninth to take a 6-5 win over Cal Poly. Michael Hur provided the game-tying and go-ahead runs with a one-out single through the right side of the infield scoring Carl Uhl and Trevor Hairgrove.
UC Riverside's record is now 33-20, 12-12 in the Big West, and they await the decision of the NCAA selection committee Monday at 9:30 am PT to learn if they will be packing their bags come tournament time.
A half inning before Hur's big hit, the Highlanders were in danger of ruining starter Ryan Platt's seven-inning two-hit performance. Matt Larkins replaced Platt to start the eighth with the score tied at three, but gave up a single to Adam Melker and a two-run home run to Adam Buschini before getting out of the inning.
The Highlanders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first as an RBI groundout by Hur scored Uhl and Robert Brantly's single through the right side plated Joey Gonzales. Two innings later, Hur made it 3-0 UCR with a one-out solo shot over the left field fence.
In the bottom half of the third, the Mustangs managed to score two runs off of Platt without the benefit of a hit. Ross Brayton opened the frame by reaching on a throwing error by Highlanders third baseman Ryan Goetz and JJ Thompson followed with a walk. Ryan Lee tried to move the runners over with a bunt, but Platt's throwing error on the play allowed Brayton to score.
After a Melker strike out, Buschini lifted a sac fly to center scoring Thompson. At the end of the inning, the Highlanders led 3-2, and Platt still had yet to give up a hit.
UCR put a runner on third with one out in the fourth and a runner on second with one out in the fifth, but were unable to score.
Platt's no-no came to an end in the bottom of the fifth when Thompson lifted a 1-1 offering over the right center field fence to tie the game at three.
Mustangs starter Mason Radeke settled down after the fifth retiring the Highlanders in order in the sixth and seventh. In the top of the eighth, Gonzales opened the inning with a walk, and a two-out single by Brantly put runners at first and second, but UCR was unable, once again, to bring them home.
In the top of the ninth, Brian McConkey drew a one-out walk, advancing to second on a Hairgrove infield single. Uhl followed with a single through the right side scoring McConkey. With two outs, Hur singled to right to give the Highlanders the win.
Joseph Kelly came in to pitch the ninth for his 12th save of the season.
