UC Riverside's Brenda Martinez used a burst of speed over the final 50m of the 1500m to take second at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships Saturday afternoon. It is by far the highest finish at the NCAAs for a Highlanders track and field athlete since the transition to Division I. Martinez's finish also earned her her second-ever All-America honor having collected her first earlier this year in the Indoor Mile. Watch Brenda's interview following the race.
Martinez's time of 4:13.97 was ,92 seconds off the pace set by Florida State's Susan Kuijken. Kuijken is a senior, making Martinez the top returner in 2010 in the event.
"I'm really proud of Brenda and all that she achieved this year," said UC Riverside Director of Track & Field Irv Ray. "Finishing second in the NCAAs is quite an honor. She'll be the top returner in the 1500m in 2010 with a great opportunity to bring home an NCAA Championship for UCR."
