Sophomore Cesar Diaz (above) is the team's leading returning scorer from a year ago with four goals and two assists for 10 points.
GAME NOTES
THE REPLACEMENTS
The Highlanders, who scored 22 goals during the 2008 season, will need to replace the offensive production of their leading scorer from a year ago, Joel Crompton (8 goals, 1 assist, 17 points) who finished his UCR career ranked tied for second in career points and fourth in goals scored. Replacing his offensive production is high on the Highlanders priority list this year. Eight other Highlanders dented the back of the net in 2008 led by Cesar Diaz's four goals, Robert Cate's three and Nathan Paterson's two.
SCHMITZ. THE KEEPER THAT MADE SAN DIEGO FAMOUS
Ryan Schmitz returns for his second full season in goal for the Highlanders. In 2008, he recorded 82 saves - the second most in the Division I history of the program.
20-20
Last year goalkeeper Ryan Schmitz and defender David Watson were the only two members of the team to play and start in all 20 matches.
NATHAN'S FAMOUS
Nathan Paterson enters the 2009 season ranked fifth on the UCR career points list and needs just seven on the year to move into second place behind Luc Harrington (2001-04).
UCR is 3-4-1 in season openers during that time.
