Volleyball Drops Season Opener 3-1 to Cincinnati at the Utah Classic

Salt Lake City, UT - The UC Riverside volleyball team, under first-year head coach Ron Larsen, opened the 2009 season at the Utah Classic with a 3-1 loss to the Cincinnati Bearcats, a team that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year. The Highlanders began the match with a 27-25 first set win, but could not hold on as the Bearcats took the next three sets 25-18, 25-19, and 27-25.
UCR got things rolling in the first set, opening up a 3-0 lead after a Kelley Quinn service ace, one of 3 during the set for the Brentwood, CA native. Trailing 10-8, the Highlanders used an 5-0 run off one Dominique Cowling kill, two errors by the Bearcats, and two more Quinn service aces to take a 13-10 lead.
UCR led 24-21and was on the verge on taking set one when Cincinnati scored four straight points to even the set at 25 apiece. The Highlanders, though, rallied for two consecutive points off a Bearcat attack error and a Quinn kill to take the set 27-25.
The Highlanders fell behind early in sets two and three, but battled in the decisive fourth set to push the Bearcats to their limits before ultimately succumbing. Down by their largest margin of the set, 13-8, UCR used an 11-6 run to notch the set at 19 apiece. The Highlanders and Cats then traded points until it was all squared at 25 before Cincinnati eventually closed out the match 27-25.
Cowling led UCR with 14 kills while Quinn tallied a game-high three service aces, Brittney Murrey recorded 33 assists, and Bianca Endersby had a hand in a game-high seven blocks.
The Highlanders continue play at the Utah Classic with games against No. 17 ranked Utah on Saturday at 9:00 am followed by a 4:00 pm tilt with Arizona State.
