CSU Bakersfield 3, UC Riverside 2
UC Riverside's offense showed some life Friday evening as Robert Cate and Joel Garcia both picked up goals for the Highlanders, but UCR was forced to play a man down following two yellow cards issued to Azeez Atanda, and they couldn't hold on to the lead falling to the Roadrunners 3-2.
Cate got UC Riverside (0-3-0) on the scoreboard first netting a header off of a Tyler Wilson free kick for a 1-0 Highlanders lead with 25:12 gone in the first. That score held up through the first period, but with 18:44 gone in the second, Atanda picked up his second yellow card of the night, and the Highlanders would play a man down for the final 27:16.
Four seconds after Atanda's second yellow, UCR's Jose Diaz picked up a yellow card which resulted in a penalty kick attempt by the Roadrunners' (2-2-0) Alberto Navarro which tying the game at one apiece.
The Highlanders countered less than three minutes later as Garcia scored his first goal of the season off of an assist by Normando Mariscal.
UC Riverside held that 2-1 lead for the next 15 minutes, but CSUB's Evan Fassler tied the match at two with 8:23 remaining, and Justin Finch scored the game-winner with just 5:06 to go.
The Highlanders return to Riverside on Sunday for their first home match of the 2009 season as they host San Jose State in the first match of a men's and women's double header at 2:30 p.m. The UCR Women's Soccer Team hosts San Diego State beginning at 6 p.m.
