Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team used a balanced offensive effort Monday evening to beat visiting Cal State Los Angeles, 86-72, in the lone exhibition game of the 2010 preseason for the Highlanders. Every player on the roster played at least 10 minutes, and every player scored at least two points.
The Highlanders showed a bit of rust in the opening moments missing their first seven shots from the field, but a Tyquan Brown free throw put UCR on the board and ignited a 15-0 run that saw the Highlanders turn a 5-0 deficit into a 15-5 advantage. Six different players scored during the run.
The Golden Eagles countered with a 7-0 run of their own to cut the UCR advantage to three at the 10:05 mark in the first, but four minutes later the Highlanders pushed their lead to double digits again.
UCR's biggest lead in the first was 17 points, 40-23, with 1:27 left in the period, and they went into the locker room with a 13-point advantage at 42-29.
Javon Borum led the Highlanders in the first with eight points. Newcomers Phil Martin and Andy Saharan chipped in with seven and six points respectively.
Cal State LA made a run early in the second making it a 10-point ballgame with 16:34 to go, but UC Riverside pushed the lead back out to 20 on two occasions and led by at least a dozen points the rest of the way.
Borum led the Highlanders with 17 points on the night hitting three of six shots from long range, while Martin just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine boards and Saharan drilled four of five three balls for 12 points on the night.
The Highlanders dominated the glass outrebounding CSLA 52-33 and a 16-8 edge on the offensive end of the glass led to a 27-10 UCR advantage in second chance points. UC Riverside scored nearly half of its points (40) in the paint, and had a 12-2 lead in fast break points.
The Highlanders open up the 2010-11 regular season on the road on Friday, November 12 at UNLV's Thomas and Mack Center. Tip of is slated for 7:30 pm PT.
