Box Score - North Texas 9, UC Riverside 1 (5)
San Antonio, TX - The UC Riverside softball team (2-7) opened the UTSA Tournament on Friday afternoon with a 9-1 loss to North Texas in five innings at Roadrunner Field.
The Mean Green started things off with three runs in the top of the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. The Highlanders got one run back in the bottom of the second inning as Brittany Keeney (pictured) scored when Alexis Pickett reached base on a fielding error by the first baseman, cutting the lead to 3-1.
North Texas then tacked on three runs during each of the next two innings to take command with a 9-1 advantage. Neither team plated a run in the fifth as the game ended due to the eight-run rule after five complete innings.
Keeney, Taylor Thomas, and Ariel Shore recorded one hit apiece while Pickett posted the lone RBI and Keeney the solo run.
Lauren Molina gave up four hits and five runs, all earned, during her two innings on the mound for the Highlanders, picking up her third loss of the season.
Amy Lwin came in for relief for 1.1 innings but allowed the other four runs on four hits, while Casey Suda closed out the game on the mound, pitching 1.2 innings and giving up just one hit.
UC Riverside continues play in Texas with a 4:00 pm PST game against the host UTSA on Friday.
