
Andriese Scatters Six Hits Over Eight Innings In 8-5 Win Over San Francisco

Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team scored four runs in the first two innings and starting pitcher Matt Andriese scattered six hits over eight innings as the Highlanders topped San Francisco 8-5 at the Riverside Sports Complex on Friday evening.
Andriese retired the first seven batters he faced, and by the time he allowed his first base runner in the third, the Highlanders were up 4-0. Robert Brantly knocked in two of the four runs with an RBI single in the first and a double to right field in the second while Eddie Young picked up an RBI on a bases loaded walk and Joey Gonzales added a sac fly.
The Dons touched Andriese for a run in the third as Connor Bernatz hit a high chopper over the mound for San Francisco's first base runner of the night, and two batters later Pete Lavin's sac fly cut the UCR lead to 4-1.
The Highlanders put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth opening the frame with three straight singles to make it 5-1 UC Riverside. Brantly picked up his third RBI of the game with a sac fly later in the inning, and Michael Hur drilled his fourth homer of the season over the left center field fence to stake Andriese to an 8-1 lead.
San Francisco scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth to make it an 8-4 game finally chasing Andriese after eight innings. Ben Doucette came on in relief in the ninth giving up a run before Derek Speigner picked up the final out of the game for his first save of the season.
Game two of the three-game-series between the Highlanders and Dons is slated for Saturday, March 20. First pitch is slated for 2 pm PT.
