UC Riverside 1, Saint Mary's 0 Box Score
Moraga, CA—UC Riverside starter Dustin Emmons allowed eight hits and walked one in a complete-game effort, and Trent Jemmett (pictured) brought home the only run of the game with a ground out in the top of the fifth as the Highlanders put an end to a three-game losing streak Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 win over Saint Mary's.
It was the first 1-0 win for UCR (10-8) since James Simmons and Daniel Stange combined on a five-hitter against Santa Clara on February 18, 2006. (Complete list of UC Riverside Division I-era, 1-0 Decisions).
The Highlanders had multiple opportunities to score in the early going as they put nine runners on base in the first four innings. A pair double-play grounders, however, helped Saint Mary's (7-10-1) starter Kyle Barraclough (1-3) work out of the jams.
Meanwhile, Emmons (4-1) allowed just three hits through the first four innings, and UC Riverside finally gave him a lead to work with in the top of the fifth. Michael Hur singled with one out in the inning, and moved to second on a Justin Shults' single. A ground out by Dan Pellegrino moved both runners up 90 feet, and brought Trent Jemmett to the plate. The San Diego, California native hit a chopper to Gaels third baseman Partick Wisdom, but rather than throw the ball to first for the force out, Wisdom chased down Shults who was headed towards third for the final out of the inning. By the time he tagged Shults, however, Hur had already scored with what would prove to be the only run of the game.
Emmons retired the Gaels in order in the fifth and sixth innings; worked out of a two-on, two-out jam in the seventh; and survived a single and a walk in the eighth. Taylor Reid replaced Barraclough to start the sixth and gave up just three hits over the final four innings to keep Saint Marys in the game.
Emmons got the first out of the bottom of the ninth on a fly ball to center, but Shawn O'Brien followed with a double. After Chris Murphy's ground out to first moved O'Brien to third, Emmons enduced a pop up off the bat of Mikey Reynolds to polish off just the third complete-game, 1-0 victory by a UCR pitcher in the Highlanders' division-I era.
UC Riverside won game two of the double header by scoring four runs in the ninth for an 8-5 victory.
