UC Riverside 8, Saint Mary's 4 Box Score
Moraga, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team completed its four-game series at Saint Mary's Sunday afternoon as Michael Hur (pictured) scored three runs and Justin Shults dove in three in an 8-4 Highlanders victory. The win is the third in a row for UCR who moves four games over .500 for the first time since March 5.
Matt Larkins (2-2) got the start for the Highlanders in search of his second win of the season and he held the Gaels (7-12-1) to just two hits through the first three innings of play,
His teammates staked him to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth as Michael Hur opened the frame with a double to left. He came around to score when Saint Mary's shortstop Drew Fisher threw away a Trent Jemmett grounder which also allowed Jemmett to advance to second. A wild pitch move Jemmett 90 feet closer to home, and Mike Nesbitt's single up the middle made it 2-0 Highlanders.
The Gaels got one back in the bottom of the inning as Brendan Kalfus drilled a two-out homer to right center for his second round-tripper of the year.
The Highlanders doubled their scoring output in the top of the sixth when Bryan Horst's double to right center plated Jemmett and Shults. Patrick Wisdom's fifth homer of the season for the Gaels, a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth, cut the UCR lead in half, but the Highlanders scored a pair in the seventh and eighth to make it 8-2 UC Riverside.
Larkins retired the final nine batters he faced following Wisdom's home run and left the game after the bottom of the eighth having allowed just five hits and one walk.
Saint Mary's touched UCR reliever Kevin Dickey for two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but he retired Greg Ditmer, Chris Murphy and Michael Cipolla in order to close out the inning.
The Highlanders are off until Thursday evening when Big West Conference competition gets underway with a three-game series with Cal Poly First pitch Thursday is slated for 6 pm PT at the Riverside Sports Complex.
