Box Score - UC Riverside 3, East Tennessee State 2
Box Score - #14/17 Ohio State 7, UC Riverside 1
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team split of pair of games on Friday afternoon to open the aTen Construction Tournament at Amy S. Harrison Field. The Highlanders (6-10) defeated East Tennessee State 3-2, but lost 7-1 to #14/17 Ohio State in the night cap.
In the first game, the Buccaneers (7-7) scored a single run in both the first and second innings off UCR starter Marissa Alvidrez to take an early 2-0 lead. After the second inning, however, Alvidrez allowed just two hits through the next five frames as she held ETSU's bats at bay.
The Highlanders would get those two runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kameryn Hebenton started things off with a single to left field and advanced to second on a Taylor Thomas (pictured) sacrifice. Alvidrez then lifted an offering from Marissa Hardy and flew it over the centerfield fence for a two-RBI home run, tying the game at 2-2.
The Buccaneers threatened in the top of the seventh, but the Highlanders got out of the jam and headed into the bottom of the inning still knotted at two apiece.
With one out in the seventh, Kayle White drew a walk and later advanced to second after an Alexis Villamor single. The next at bat, K. Hebenton flied out to right field, which allowed White to advance 60 feet to third base. Thomas then lined a single up the middle for the game-winning run, lifting the Highlanders to a 3-2 victory.
Alvidrez (6-3) got the win for UCR, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out five. Hardy picked up the loss for ETSU, allowing three runs on six hits.
In the night cap against No. 14/17 Ohio State, the Buckeyes scored early with four runs in the first inning and two in the second to take a 6-0 advantage. The score stayed the same through the next two innings until OSU scored a single run in the fifth for a 7-0 margin.
UC Riverside was able to get one run back in the bottom of fifth as Lauren Molina hit the first home run of her career to close the margin to 7-1.
That was all the scoring both teams would do, however, as there was a combined two hits through the last two innings of play.
Alvidrez got the loss for the Highlanders while OSU's Melanie Nichols earned the win for the Buckeyes.
