Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team dropped a pair of games on Sunday afternoon to conclude the aTen Construction Tournament at Amy S. Harrison Field. The Highlanders (6-12) lost 10-0 to Notre Dame in five innings, and couldn't quite pull off the comeback in game two as they lost to East Tennessee State 5-2.
Down 5-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning against the Buccaneers, Alexis Pickett hit a solo home run to right field, cutting the lead to 5-2. The Highlanders then started a two-out rally as singles from Jojo Mendoza and Alexis Villamor put the tying run at the plate. Unfortunately for UCR, they couldn't bring the runs home as ETSU held on for the 5-2 win.
Amy Lwin (pictured) gave up five runs, all earned, in seven innings of work while striking out two. Jessica Duncan got the win for the Buccaneers, allowing two runs in seven innings.
Against Notre Dame, the Highlanders had opportunities to score, but they left 10 runners on base throughout the game. The Fighting Irish's bats came alive as they had three straight innings of three runs each, blowing open a 1-0 game after the second. Because of the eight-run rule, the game ended in the fifth with Notre Dame leading 10-0.
Marissa Alvidrez allowed seven runs in 3.2 innings of work, while Lauren Molina came in for relief and gave up three runs in 1.1 innings in the circle. Jody Valdivia got the win for the Irish, allowing just two hits in four innings of work.
On the day, Pickett led the Highlanders with four hits, including two doubles, two RBI, and one run.
The Highlanders host a doubleheader against Buffalo on Tuesday, Mar. 9 beginning at 12:30 pm at Amy S. Harrison Field.
