
Highlanders Shutout Central Michigan, 1-0, In 2003 Season Opener

Flagstaff, AZ—Junior defender Kristi Tanaka scored a goal late in the first half to give the women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Central Michigan Friday afternoon. The win at a four-team tournament hosted by Northern Arizona, keeps the Highlanders a perfect 3-0 in the universisity's first day of competition of 2003-04 with volleyball and men's soccer winning earlier contests.
Tanaka scored in the 44th minute on a direct free kick for the lone goal in a close match that had the Highlanders with a slight 7-5 advantage in shots. Tanaka and sophomore Renee Scachetti led the team with two shots apeice.
Junior goalkeeper Katie Blank made two saves and earned a solo-shutout.
Central Michigan used two keepers with both of the team's saves coming in the first period by Kari Alexander. The defense kept the Highlanders from getting any shots on goal in the second frame.
Both teams will play again on Sunday with Central Michigan meeting Idaho in the early match and UCR facing the host, Northern Arizona, at 2:00 p.m.
The Highlanders open the 2003 homestand hosting Gonzaga on Friday, September 5 at 3:00 p.m.
