UC Riverside 2, Air Force 0 - Box Score
CO—UC Riverside scored two goals in the space of two minutes in the late stages to defeat Air Force Academy 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Cadet Soccer Stadium in Colorado. The win is the Highlanders' first of the season as they improve to 1-1-0 while the loss drops the Falcons to 0-2-0.
Air Force had the advantage in the first half, outshooting the Highlanders 10-3 but were held scoreless thanks to senior goalkeeper Tawny Poggio. On three occasions, Poggio thwarted Falcon one-on-one opportunities to keep UCR in the game.
The second half was the reverse, as UCR went on the offensive, holding a 10-4 advantage in shots. Still, the breakthrough would not come until the 81:55 mark, when junior forward Jenna Leonti connected off a throw-in from freshman forward Stephanie Hill. Hill's throw from the right sideline bounced over several Air Force defenders and found Leonti charging through the middle of the box to collect the ball about five yards in front of the net. Her shot went under the reach of Falcon goalkeeper Erin Wallace for the Highlanders' first goal of the season. It was also Leonti's 11th goal of her career, giving her sole possession of third place on UCR's career list.
Just under two minutes later, UCR struck again, as senior midfielder Linda Allen scored from 15 yards out at the 83:30 mark to essentially put the match away. Taking a pass from freshman forward Lauren Leonard, Allen shot from the top left corner of the box and curled the ball over Wallace to the far right post.
Poggio finished with four saves, giving her 302 for her career to become just the fourth goalie in Big West Conference history to reach the 300-save mark. Wallace had six saves in the loss.
With the win, the Highlanders improve to 2-0 all-time against the Falcons.
