
Highlanders Fall, 2-0, In Lightning-Shortened Season Opener

Colorado Springs, CO—UC Riverside suffered its first season-opening loss since 2002 as Colorado College shut out the Highlanders 2-0 at Stewart Field. The match, whose start was delayed 65 minutes due to lightning, eventually was called due to more inclement weather and darkness with 11:09 remaining in regulation time.
CC freshman Emily Beans celebrated her collegiate debut with a goal and an assist. The Tigers got all the offense they would need on a tally by Jessica Beinlich in the 21st minute of play. After Beans made a pass from the right side that was redirected byLisa Balsama, Beinlich settled the ball just outside the top of the box and lifted her shot inside the far post at 20:38. Beans later took a long pass from sophomore defender Alexa Bannerman and raced in to complete the scoring at 64:06.
CC outshot the Highlanders, 12-5, and UCR forced Tiger goalkeeper Geneva Sills to make just one save. Highlander senior goalkeeper Tawny Poggio made two saves to give her 298 for her career.
UCR drops to 0-1 for the first time since 2002 while the Tigers extended their home-field undefeated streak to 14 games (11-0-3) dating back to September 2004.
