UCR Women's Soccer Ties Nevada 1-1 In 2005 Season Opener

Reno, NV—The University of Nevada scored with 1:41 remaining in the game to tie UC Riverside 1-1 in the season opener for both teams Friday night at Mackay Stadium in Reno, NV.
UC Riverside (0-0-1) got on the board in the eighth minute of the match when senior Angela Reling beat Nevada goalie Megan Tarpenning to the back post to give the Highlanders an early 1-0 lead.
Nevada (0-0-1) came close to equalizing in the 13th minute when Pack freshman Miranda Montejo crossed the ball to freshman Jessica Thompson who had her close range shot saved by Highlander keeper Tawny Poggio.
UCR was outshot 10-3 in the second half but held on until the 89th minute, when Montejo scored off an assist from senior Annie Baxter. Baxter took the ball down the left side of the field and dropped it back to Montejo who hit a one time shot past Poggio to even the score at 1-1 and send the game into overtime. It was the first goal scored by the Wolfpack against the Highlanders in four meetings.
Tarpenning and Poggio both finished the match with four saves a piece.
It was the first tie in a season opener for UCR, who drop to 3-1-1 all-time in season openers. UCR remainds 3-0-1 against the Wolfpack while Nevada improves to 0-5-1 all-time in season openers.
