Riverside—Senior midfielder Renee Scachetti posted her second consecutive two-goal game and broke the school record for most goals and points in a single season, leading UC Riverside to a 3-0 non-conference victory over North Dakota State Friday afternoon at the UCR Soccer Stadium. Scachetti scored twice and added one assist to give her nine goals and 22 points in 2005.
UCR dominated possession and scoring opportunities throughout the game, tallying a season-high 21 shots to NDSU’s six, including an 11-0 advantage in shots on goal. The Highlanders attacked almost immediately, calling NDSU goalie Karli Kopietz into action just 1:06 after the opening kick-off as Kopietz dove to save freshman forward Jenna Leonti’s 16-yard shot. UCR outshot NDSU 7-2 in the first 45 minutes but could not get on the scoresheet as Kopietz made three saves. The second half was the Scachetti Show as the senior had a hand in all three goals.
Five minutes after the restart, she latched onto headers by Leonti and senior midfielder Angela Reling. With four defenders in front of her, Scachetti dribbled left from 30 yards out. Just outside the penalty box, she cut back onto her right foot, hitting her shot just inside the post and past a diving Kopietz at 50:01. The goal was her eighth of the season, tying her own school record that she shared with Leonti from last season.
At 54:08, Scachetti tied her single-season record of 20 points from 2004, supplying the assist on UCR’s second goal. Reling again was involved, crossing from the left side to an oncoming Scachetti. Scachetti’s right-footed shot was saved by Kopietz but fell at the feet of senior forward Vanessa Chanez, who poked it into the goal for her second of the season and 12th of her career.
With the Bison running out of gas in the California heat, Scachetti broke both the UCR goals and points records in the 68th minute. The move started in the UCR defense, with numerous passes that eventually found freshman midfielder Melina Triantos in the middle of the pitch. Triantos carried the ball into the Bison half, then slotted a pass out to the left flank for freshman forward Loana Holness. Holness hit a one-time pass into the penalty area, where Scachetti smacked home with a left-footed shot from 16 yards.
Freshman Brittany Goetz was not required to make a save in goal to earn her first career shutout and victory. Kopietz stopped eight shots for the Bison.
Scachetti now owns three of the top six single-season scoring tallies in UCR history. Her 25 career goals are also a school record, 13 ahead of Chanez, who is in second place. Scachetti also pulled an assist ahead of Chanez atop the career assist list, getting her 12th. In addition, Scachetti became the first Highlander to break the 60-point barrier for her career.
UCR won its ninth consecutive home non-conference match and guaranteed itself of a winning non-conference record.
