UC Riverside 8, Long Beach State 7 - Box Score
Riverside—UC Riverside squandered a five-run lead over the final two innings of play at the Riverside Sports Complex Friday evening, but Justin Shults sent the Highlanders home happy as his bases loaded single with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth gave UCR an 8-7 win over Long Beach State. (Listen to Ghizal Hasan's call of the play) The win improves the Highlanders' record to 16-12, 4-3 while the Dirtbags fall to 14-16, 3-4.
UC Riverside was in cruise control as starter Matt Andriese headed to the mound for his eighth inning of work. Two innings prior, the Highlanders scored six runs to take a 7-2 lead, and they appeared to have the game in hand. After retiring Brennan Metzger on a grounder to second, Andriese allowed the next four hitters to single, single, double and single to make it a 7-4 ballgame.
Andriese gave way to Mike Wolford in the ninth, and after striking out Jonathan Jones for the first out of the inning, Wolford wrapped two singles and a double around another strikeout as the Dirtbags cut the UCR lead to one.
Derek Speigner came on with two outs and Kirk Singer on second, and he was greeted by a Devin Lohman double to center that tied the score. He got the next hitter, Joey Terdoslavich, to fly out to right, but the damage was done.
Joey Gonzales led off the bottom of the ninth for UCR against reliever Kenny Arenerich and immiedately stole the momentum back from Long Beach State. Center fielder Tre Dennis stumbled chasing Gonzales' fly ball to the wall and it knicked off his golve for a lead-off triple.
The Dirtbags coaching staff had Aernerich intentionally walk Hur and Brantly to load the bases for Shults. Jason Markovitz entered the game to face the Highlanders designated hitter, and The Beach moved one of their outfielders into the infield to try and cut down Gonzales at home. Shults foiled their plans with a shot to left center over the drawn in outfield, and the Highlanders had the 8-7 win in hand.
Speigner (2-1) got the win while Aenerich was saddled with his first loss of the season. Andriese threw eight innings striking out seven and allowing four earned runs. Long Beach State starter Andrew Gangon lasted five and two thirds innings and allowed seven earned runs.
The Dirtbags were in control in the early going opening up a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as T.J. Mittelstaedt led off the frame with a double to left and moved to third on a sac bunt by Jonathan Jones. Jordan Casas's sac fly to left gave Long Beach State a one run lead. Brantly tied things up a half inning later as he led off the bottom of the second with his fourth home run of the year.
The score remained tied at one until the top of the fifth as the Dirtbags Kellen Hoime reached on a single up the middle and advanced to second on a ground out to second by Metzger. Hoime came around to score the following play when Singer singled to short.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Joey Gonzales brought the Highlanders back to even when he led off the inning with his second dinger of the season. Shults put UC Riverside on top two batters later when he connected on his third homer of the year.
The Highlanders weren't done, however, as Tony Nix and Eddie Young drew back-to-back walks and the executed a double steal to put runners at second and third for Bryan Horst. The second baseman laced a single up the middle plating both runners to put UC Riverside up 5-2. Trevor Hairgrove drew a walk which ended Gagnon's day bring on relief pitcher Eddie Magallon.
Magallon didn't fare much better as he was called for a balk before throwing his first pitch moving runners to second and third. Brian McConkey brought Hairgrove and Horst homeward with a single up the middle for a 7-2 Highlanders' lead.
The Highlanders and Dirtbags face one another again on Saturday, April 17 with first pitch slated for 6 pm PT.
