Box Score - Pacific 11, UC Riverside 2 (5 Innings)
Box Score - UC Riverside 4, Pacific 3 (13 Innings)
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team split a doubleheader with Pacific on Saturday afternoon by losing 11-2 in five innings in game one but rebounding for a 4-3 win in 13 innings in game two at Amy S. Harrison Field in Big West Conference play.
The Highlanders improve to 22-22 overall and 7-4 in league play, tying the UCR Division I record for total wins and conference wins. The Tigers fall to 18-25 and 4-6.
Pacific hit UCR starter Marissa Alvidrez early in game one, getting one run in the first, two in the third, and one in the fourth for a 4-0 advantage.
The Highlanders got one run back in the fourth inning as an Alexis Pickett sac fly scored pinch runner Dawn Brodersen from third to cut the margin to 4-1.
In the top of the fifth inning, however, the Tigers batted around the order and scored seven runs on five hits and two errors. Casey Suda relieved Alvidrez after the first two runs, but gave up the remaining five runs in the inning, although all were unearned because of the two errors.
UC Riverside managed to plate a solo run in its fifth inning, but the damage was done as the eight-run rule took effect and the game ended with the Tigers winning 11-2.
Alvidrez (15-9) was saddled with the loss, going 4.1 innings and allowing six runs on eight hits. Shaina Brock earned the win for Pacific, pitching five innings and allowing just two runs on five hits.
Looking to win at least one game on the first day of a Big West doubleheader for the fourth straight week, the Highlanders fell behind 1-0 after the second inning but took a 2-1 lead in their respective frame on a two-RBI home run by Brittany Keeney.
The Highlanders lead was short lived, however, as the Tigers scored the equalizer in the top of the third off a sac fly to make it 2-2.
Two innings later, UC Riverside retook the lead on a Kayla White RBI single to give them a 3-2 advantage. The Highlanders went into the top of seventh inning leading by that same score, but the Tigers again tied things up with a solo run in the seventh, sending the game into extra innings.
Both teams had opportunities to score runs in each of the extra frames, as UCR left seven batters on base while Pacific left four batters on base, but neither team could plate a run as they headed into the bottom of the 13th inning.
After a line out and strike out, Brooke Hebenton (pictured) drilled a solo home run to center field, lifting the Highlanders to a 4-3 victory.
The 13 innings played are the second-longest in the program's Division I history, as the 2002 Highlanders were the benefactor of a 1-0 win in 14 innings on Mar. 24 at Cal Poly.
Amy Lwin (3-8) picked up the win for UCR, pitching all 13 innings and giving up just three runs on 11 hits. Nikki Armagost took the loss for the Tigers, giving up four runs on 10 hits in 12.2 innings of work.
For the day, Kameryn Hebenton and Keeney led the team with three hits apiece while Brooke Hebenton led with two runs and Keeney led with two RBI.
The Highlanders conclude their three-game series with the Tigers on Sunday, Apr. 25 at 12:00 pm at Amy S. Harrison Field.
