UC Davis 13, UC Riverside 1 Box Score
Riverside—After outscoring UC Davis by 12-8 and 26-7 scores in the first two games of their three-game conference series, the Highlanders came into Sunday's meeting looking for the sweep and a third place finish in the Big West. The Aggies had other ideas, however, as starter Scott Lyman limited UCR to five hits and just one run over his seven innings on the mound, and the UC Davis batters banged out 19 hits in a 13-1 win over the Highlanders.
The loss also spoiled Senior Day for UCR as they honored their four graduating seniors—Mike Nesbitt, Michael Hur, Brian McConkey and Joey Gonzales—prior to the game.
UC Riverside still managed to finish third in conference as the Pacific Tigers dropped an 8-5 extra-innings decision to UC Santa Barbara. The Highlanders finish the season with a 32-23 record and a 13-11 mark in the Big West.
The Aggies took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Justin Schafer led off the game with a triple to left center, and came home on a sac fly to right off the bat of Scott Heylman. In the bottom of the first, the Highlanders string of scoring at least one run in 10 consecutive innings came to an end as Lyman retired the first three UC Riverside batters in order.
The Highlanders got two runners on base in the bottom of the second but failed to score, and went in order in the bottom of the third. By the time Joey Gonzales scored in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a lead-off double and a pair of wild pitches,UCR was down 6-1, as the Aggies scored two runs in their half of the third and three more in the fourth.
UC Davis got another run in the top of the fifth and plated four more in the top of the sixth to take an 11-1 lead. Lyman continued his mastery of the Highlanders finally exiting the game after the seventh.
The Aggies scored single runs in the eighth and ninth to end the scoring.
