New York, NY - UC Riverside catcher Robert Brantly was the first Highlanders baseball player selected in the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday, as the Detroit Tigers took him 100th overall in the third round of the draft. Michael Hur (601st overall), Dustin Emmons (1217th overall), and Dan Pellegrino (1488th overall) were selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks, Florida Marlins, and San Francisco Giants respectively.
Brantly was named to the All-Big West First Team this season after earning the starting catching job for the Highlanders in 2010. He was recently named one of 16 finalists for the Johnny Bench Award, and on the year hit .373 with a .440 on base percentage and a .569 slugging percentage. He led the Highlanders with 78 base hits and finished second on the team with 50 runs scored.
Left fielder Michael Hur joined Brantly in the draft as he was selected 601st overall to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 20th round on Tuesday.
Last week, Hur earned his second career Big West All-Conference honor with a Second-Team selection, as he garnered First Team accolades a year ago. In 2010, the DH turned left fielder hit .329 and slugged .528. He finished second on the team with 50 runs scored and third on the squad in home runs with eight.
Right handed pitcher Dustin Emmons was selected on day three of draft on Wednesday, going in the 40th round and 1217th overall to the Florida Marlins.
Emmons recorded nine wins to just four losses during the season—the most wins of any Highlanders player in 2010. He posted the third-lowest ERA on the squad (3.99) in 13 starts and 16 appearances, pitching 90.1 innings. In 2009, he was named the All-Big West Second Team.
Pellegrino was selected in the 49th round on Wednesday to the San Francisco Giants at 1488th overall. The junior catcher hit a career-best .283 during the 2010 season for the Highlanders, while backing up Brantly behind the plate.
The MLB Draft continues through June 9.
