
Women's Basketball Adds Seyram Gbewonyo To Coaching Staff

Riverside - Former UC Riverside women’s basketball player Seyram Gbewonyo joined her alma mater as an Assistant Coach on September 1, 2010 following a stint playing professional basketball overseas.
"It's good to have Seyram back," Head Coach John Margaritis stated. "She played a huge role in the success of our program during her four years here. She helped elevate UCR basketball to a perenial contender in the Big West Conference, and now I feel she will be able to bring all that experience and knowledge to our team from a coaching perspective."
Gbewonyo played for the blue and gold from 2005-09, helping them advance to three postseasons including trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2005-06 and 2006-07.
Gbewonyo was a four-time All-Big West Conference selection, earning First Team honors in 2008-09, a Second Team award in 2009-10, and two Honorable Mention accolades (2005-06 and 2006-07), as well as being named to the 2005-06 All-Big West Freshmen Team.
She became UC Riverside’s career leader in minutes played on Feb. 5, 2009 at Pacific, and started all but three games over her entire career.
At the conclusion of her playing career, she ranked fourth on the Highlanders career scoring list with 1,426 points, averaging 11.6 over her four years. The Sylmar, CA native also ranked among the top-10 in 11 other individual categories.
Gbewonyo received her Bachelor of Arts degree from UC Riverside in interdisciplinary studies: ethnic studies and political science in 2009.
After graduation, she played professionally for Olympiada Larissa in Greece from September-December of 2009 averaging 8.5 points.
Gbewonyo prepped at Sylmar High School where she was named team and league Most Valuable Player as a junior and a senior. Her brother, Nana Gbewonyo, is an actor who appeared in Coach Carter (2005) and Grand Torino (2008).
Gbewonyo resides in Riverside.
