Men's Soccer Sends Match Into OT, But No. 17 UCLA Prevails, 2-1
9/10/2010 12:27:02 AM | Men's Soccer
#17 UCLA 2, UC Riverside 1 (OT) Box Score
Los Angeles—Alex Racca’s goal off of a free kick in the 83rd minute sent the match into overtime, but 17th-ranked UCLA scored with 2:04 gone in the first extra period for the 2-1 win. (Watch Video Highlights)
The Highlanders (1-3-0) and Bruins (2-1-0) were scoreless after the first period of play with little being generated in the way of offense. Each team had two shots in the period, none of which were taken on goal.
UCLA picked up the pace in the second half causing the UC Riverside defense to bend, but not break, through much of the final 45 mintues of play. The Bruins took 15 shots in the second period and Reed Williams finally broke through with 10:12 to go in regulation for the first goal of the match and a 1-0 UCLA advantage,
The Highlanders countered three minutes later, however, after the Bruins were called for a hand ball just outside the box. Alex Racca lined up for the subsequent free kick and bent his shot over the UCLA wall, under the cross bar, and away from the outstretched arms of Bruins keeper Brian Rowe to tie the match at one apiece.
The hectic pace of the second period continued in the first overtime, and with just over two minutes ticked off the clock the Highlanders defense gave up the ball on a mis-hit back to goalkeeper Nick Goldreich. Victor Chavez controlled the errant pass and flipped it into the goal for the game-winner.
The Highlanders are home this Monday, September 13 for their first match of the season at the friendly confines of the UCR Soccer Stadium. Biola heads to the Inland Empire for a 7 pm PT kick off.
