Box Score - CSU Bakersfield 3, UC Riverside 0
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside men's soccer team (2-4-0) was shutout for the first time this season in a 3-0 loss to No. 17 ranked CSU Bakersfield (4-0-0) on Thursday evening at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
CSUB's Richard Menjivar netted the first goal of the game off a header at the 33:06 mark for a 1-0 lead. Almost seven minutes later, Ernesto Hinojosa passed to Robbie Gouk at midfield, and Gouk lobbed it to Gyasi Zardes on a breakaway for the second goal of the half.
In the second period, the Runners added an insurance goal 15 minutes into play. Scott Luedtke's shot was blocked by UCR keeper Nick Goldreich, but Luedtke got his rebound and this time found the back of the net to give CSUB a 3-0 advantage.
"Bakersfield is a solid opponent ... a top-25 team," Head Coach Junior Gonzalez stated. "They pressed us pretty well defensively. We weren't applying the things that gave us success early in the season. We have a lot to improve, but we can learn from the game."
On the night, CSU Bakersfield outshot the Highlanders 16 to 10, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Joel Garcia (pictured) and Ruben Valencia led the team with three shots apiece.
Men's Soccer returns to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 24 to host Air Force at 6:00 pm at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
