Box Score - UC Riverside 0, Utah State 0, 2OT
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside women's soccer team got its first draw of the year on Sunday afternoon as they dueled to a 0-0 double overtime tie against Utah State at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
The Aggies (3-2-4) attacked early in the first period by firing off three shots in the first five and a half minutes, keeping UCR keeper Jessica White on her toes as she quickly garnered three saves.
The Highlanders (1-6-1) countered with three shots of their own in the next five minutes, none of which found the back of the net.
It looked as if UCR was going to go into the break up 1-0, but Kristina Kelly's shot with just eight seconds remaining hit the top of the cross bar as the first half came to a close.
To open the second half, the Highlanders came out on the aggressive side, taking three shots within the first ten minutes after being outshot 12-7 in the first period.
UCR would take four more shots in the half, although none found the goal. The defense limited the Aggies to just two shots in the period as the game headed into overtime still tied at 0-0.
In the first overtime period, the Aggies got the better of UCR offensively, firing off three shots compared to none for the Highlanders.
The best opportunity for a goal came late in the period as Utah State's Lauren Hansen crossed the ball from the corner, looking for Shantel Flanery. The ball deflected off a UCR defender and slipped past both Flanery and White in goal, but Ciara Hilpert was on the goal line to kick it away, preserving the 0-0 tie.
Both teams had good looks at the goal in the second overtime, but again neither squad could put one away as the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
"Today I thought we played well," Head Coach Veronica O'Brien stated afterwards. "The Sunday games are always tough after playing a long, hard battle on Friday night. I think offensively we keep improving, but we're still looking for that goal."
Andrea Morales (pictured) led UC Riverside with six shots, one of them on goal, while USU's Hansen took seven shots for the Aggies.
White recorded seven saves for the Highlanders while Utah State's keeper Ashlyn Mulford had three.
The Highlanders return to the pitch next Friday, Sept. 24 for a 3:00 pm contest against Nevada in Irvine, CA.
