Ryan's Remarks: Updated Blog From Men's Tennis Player Ryan Stanbury
1/5/2011 2:20:21 PM | Men's Tennis
UC Riverside men's tennis senior Ryan Stanbury has started writing a blog for gohighlanders.com. Curious about what it's like to be a student-athlete at an NCAA Division I institution? Then Ryan's Remarks are for you!
Check out Ryan's second installment on the 2010-11 Highlanders men's tennis program below, or brush up on his first blog. Want to ask Ryan questions? Go ahead and email your questions and he will answer them for you on this blog.
With the team returning from the long holiday break, it’s time to get back into the swing of things as our season opener is less than 10 days away. We are all eagerly awaiting our January 14th opener against the University of Nevada which will be played on a neutral site at Cal State Northridge University.
Later that weekend we will match up with the San Diego State Aztecs at the Indian Well’s Tennis Gardens, home to the most prestigious professional tennis tournament on the West Coast (we will also return to Indian Wells at the end of the year for the Big West Conference Tournament).
The Aztecs will be the first of six nationally ranked opponents we will face this year, highlighted by a match-up against perennial Pac-10 power Arizona in Tucson. Our home matches are highlighted by the Pac 10’s Oregon Ducks who come for a non-conference match-up on February 18th as well as reigning Big West Conference Champion UC Irvine who visits the SRC Tennis Courts on April 1st.
Come out and support the Highlanders!
The first part of the season will be challenging for us as the majority of our matches are away from the friendly confines of the Student Recreation Center, but we hope that these tough matches away from home will give us the mettle needed to compete in the Big West Conference as the season progresses.
In the week ahead we will be working to finalize our singles line-up and doubles pairings for our season opening weekend. A couple of “challenge” matches are being played this week to determine singles positions. We’re ready and raring to go here for the 2011 season! Talk to you again once we get underway.
