Sperber's Second Half Goal Helps Men's Soccer Tie Cal State Fullerton

Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team snapped its three-match losing streak Saturday evening as Ben Sperber's second-half goal helped the Highlanders to a 1-1 tie at Cal State Fullerton. (Box Score)
Following a scoreless first half, Kevin Venegas put the Titans up 1-0 in the 52nd minute with a header off of a cross from Jameson Campbell for his sixth goal of the season.
It took 31 minutes for the Highlanders to pick up the equalizer when Ben Sperber controlled a loose ball from 12 yards away from the goal, and beat Fullerton keeper Trevor Whiddon to tie the match at one.
Both teams had opportunities in the two overtime periods, but had to settle for the tie.
UC Riverside improved to 6-5-2 on the season including 1-3-1 in conference, moving to within two points of idle fifth place UC Santa Barbara.
The Titans are 6-4-3 on the year, and are still searching for their first Big West Conference victory (0-3-1).
Next up for the Highlanders is a Wednesday, October 19 home match against Cal State Northridge (6-6-1, 3-2-0). The Matadors dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to UC Davis on Satuday, and are now in a three-way tie for second place in the Big West with Cal Poly and the Aggies. Kick off Wednesday is slated for 7 pm PT at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
