Highlanders Celebrate New Logo Wednesday, November 30 vs. USC
11/27/2011 5:54:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Riverside—When UC Riverside hired Brian Wickstrom to be the university's new athletics director, one of his many charges was to increase awareness of Highlanders athletics thereby broadening its fanbase and connection to the community. Part of that initiative involved an updating of the athletics logos and brand identity. The celebration of that new identiy begins Wednesday night as the men's basketball team hosts USC at 7 pm at the Student Recreation Center.
This will be the first opportunity for many to see the new logos which were whittled down from a lucky 13 via online voting by the Riverside Community, the Highlander Athletics Association and Alumni Association, and finally, the student body.
As fans arrive at the SRC, they will receive a free T-shirt emblazoned with the new logos. The new secondary logo, featuring an updated version of the school mascot, Scotty Highlander, now graces the jump circle at center court, and the east wall of the SRC has been repainted to include the new logos along with the logos of every Big West Conference school.
The UCR Campus Store will also be on hand with the first-ever look at brand new merchandise, including sweatshirts, T-shirts, hats, pennants and decals, that will be on sale throughout the game.
The Highlanders social media outlets and website are also receiving makeovers, as will other athletics facilities throughout the coming year
"As our athletics programs succeed and gain regional and national attention, we want people to be able to recognize our logo," said Wickstrom. "This can only happen if we have one consistent brand and message.
"We are a UC institution, and we are located in Riverside, CA. We already have a great academic reputation, and as evidenced by the success of our fall programs, particularly our men's soccer team participating in its first-ever postseason tournament, and Chad Hall winning the Big West Conference Championship, our athletics programs are building a reputation of their own."
Fans who are unable to attend the game can feel the visual impact of the celebration by tuning to a live television broadcast of the game. The collective "Voices of the Highlanders," John Ramey and Ghizal Hasan, will bring the call to local government television (GTV) which is available in the Riverside area on Charter (Ch. 3), the greater Riverside area on Verizon FIOS (Ch. 21) and across Southern California on AT&T (Ch. 99).
The game will also be simulcast on Palm Springs ABC affiliate KESQ, and the audio of the telecast will be available via Stretch Internet on gohighlanders.com.
