Big West Names Phil Martin Men's Basketball Player Of The Week

Irvine, CA—The Big West announced today that UC Riverside's Phil Martin is the men's basketball conference player of the week for his performance in games played from January 28 through February 6.
The junior guard averaged 24.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in the Highlanders pair of Big West wins, connecting on 47.2 percent of his field goal attempts, 62.5 percent of his three-pointers and all 10 of his free throw attempts.
UCR snapped a four-game losing streak with a 73-70 win over Cal State Northridge on Thursday February 3. Martin led all scorers with 23 points on the night. Two days later, the Staten Island, NY native poured in 26 points, including 20 in the first half, as the Highlanders upended Cal State Fullerton on the road, 70-69. Martin scored 11 straight points for UCR at one point in the first half during a 16-0 Highlanders run that turned a nine-point deficit into a seven-point lead.
Martin currently ranks 13th in the league in scoring, 14th in rebounding, eighth in field goal percentage and second in free throw percentage.
The Highlanders host UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, February 10 at 7 pm PT, and travel to Cal Poly on Saturday for a 7 pm tip off.
